Title:NHS Patient Surveys in Acute Trusts 2003: Outpatients and Emergency Departments
Overview:This letter from the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI), dated 23 October 2002, explains that during Spring 2003 there will be two surveys in acute trusts, covering outpatient and emergency department (A&E) patients. The results will feature in the 2003 performance ratings.
Abstract:The Outpatient and Emergency Department patient surveys in Acute Trusts are part of the rolling programme of NHS Patient Surveys, which is now being managed by the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI). CHI has taken over responsibility for the national NHS patient survey programme from the Department of Health, following the establishment of the Office for Information on Health Care Performance. The first survey in the NHS Patient Survey Programme covered inpatients in acute trusts (2001/02). For the year 2003 there will be two surveys in acute trusts, covering outpatient and emergency department (A&E) patients. This paper outlines the objectives, content and methods for these forthcoming surveys. It includes a table showing how the survey topics for both the outpatient and the emergency department surveys may be grouped into the five domains of patient experience used by the Department of Health. The surveys will take place in spring 2003, and the results will feature in the 2003 performance ratings. The paper outlines how the Commission for Health Improvement propose to use and publish the results.
